Your First Refillery Visit: What to Expect
Share
Trying something new can bring up little questions: What should I bring? Do I need special containers? How does the refill part work? The good news is, you don’t need to be a zero-waste expert to get started. A refillery visit is simply a chance to choose useful home and body products, reuse a container where you can, and make a small change to your usual shopping routine.
At Root + River Refillery Co., we’re here to make that first visit feel easy. Here’s a simple guide to what you can expect at our South Bend shop.
Before you go: bring a container, or start with one
If you have an empty bottle or jar you’d like to reuse, bring it along. Wash it thoroughly, let it dry completely, and make sure it’s in good shape with a lid that closes securely. A clean, dry container is a good starting point for refills.
You don’t need to arrive with a cupboard full of matching glass bottles. One container is enough for a first try. If you’re not sure whether a particular bottle is suitable, bring it in and ask our team. If you don’t have a container yet, ask about reusable options available at the shop. We also carry reusable accessories, and current selection can vary.
A tote bag or sturdy box can help keep containers upright on the way home. If you’re planning to refill more than one thing, it’s also handy to make a short list so you don’t forget what you came for.
Step 1: Browse and choose what you need
Take a look around and choose a product that fits your home and routine. Root + River’s range includes laundry detergent concentrate, plant- and mineral-based cleaners, liquid hand soap, and natural bar soaps. You can browse cleaning supplies and see the natural bar soaps online before your visit.
Not everything is refilled in the same way. Liquid products are the most likely candidates for a bottle refill, while bar soaps are a simple way to avoid a liquid soap bottle altogether. Availability and refill options may change, so check with us about what’s ready to refill in-store that day.

If you’re choosing a product for a particular need, like laundry for sensitive skin or a cleaner for everyday kitchen messes, take a moment to read the product details and ask questions. Our laundry detergent concentrate, all-purpose cleaner, and liquid hand soap pages offer more information about those products.
Step 2: Refill
Once you’ve picked a product, we have handy instructions on hand in the shop. Tare the weight of your bottle using the scale in the shop, fill it with what your desired product, and the weigh it again to see what you added to the bottle.
Fill only what you’ll use, and make sure the lid is secure before packing everything up. Starting with a smaller amount can be a practical way to try something new without committing to a large bottle.
Step 3: Check out and take your refill home
Our self service kiosk makes it simple to check out. Just select what you have filled, pay and be on your way!
That’s it: you’ve refilled a container and avoided bringing home a new package for that purchase. The first visit doesn’t need to change your whole routine. You might begin with one bottle of laundry detergent or hand soap, then decide what you’d like to refill next time.

Why reusing a bottle can help
A refill replaces the need to buy a newly packaged bottle on that trip. Reusing the same container over time can help reduce the number of single-use packages you bring home and throw away. It’s a straightforward habit: use a product, clean and dry the container as needed, then bring it back when you’re ready for more.
There’s no need to aim for a perfect zero-waste household. Replacing one regularly used product is a useful start. For more about the idea behind refilling, read our beginner’s guide to why refilling is better for the planet.
Prefer refills delivered to your door? Here’s how the subscription works
A shop visit is one way to refill. Root + River also offers a closed-loop subscription for customers who prefer home delivery. You choose your products and delivery frequency, then receive full bottles at your doorstep. With a later delivery, a prepaid return label arrives so you can send back the empties.
The basic loop is simple:
- Choose the products you’d like and how often you want them delivered.
- Use the products at home and keep the empty bottles.
- Put the empties in the shipping box and use the prepaid return label to send them back.
- Root + River sanitizes and refills bottles that can be reused. Bottles that can’t be reused are properly recycled.
- Earn loyalty points when you return empties, then repeat the cycle.
The prepaid label covers returning the empty bottles; it doesn’t mean the products themselves are free. For current subscription details, visit our How It Works page and check the terms for the products you choose.
